Burney Lamar In People Magazine and To Be A Dad

Wow, one more NASCAR driver makes it to the big press and does it in style with many men in the NASCAR realm being jealous in how he's done it!

Niki Taylor and husband Burney Lamar is expecting their first child.   They were married in La Jolla, CA in December of 2006 and are the little one is due in March.

Believe it or not, they met when they were slated to sit at the same booth to sign autographs for a charity event.  Lucky bastard!!  I wonder if they've pondered sending that charity coordinator a thank you card?

In lieu of gifts, they're that asking donations be sent to Victory Junction Gang Camp.

How to have fun with RC gas cars

by Joseph Morris

Radio controlled (RC) powered cars have been popular items for kids and adults alike. RC powered cars can be both entertaining and educational. This is a great way for families to spend a lot time together. The RC electric car hobby has been around for many years and is a good way for children to learn about mechanics, suspension, electricity, servos, and radio singles or frequencies.

The future of the automobile industry worldwide over the next 20 years will be switching to electricity as it prime energy source for vehicles, and what better way for your son or daughter to be informed this new and exciting career than having them build their own replica model of a future car. Your son or daughter can build these models from component parts, so they develop good kinetic and critical thinking skills. Good kinetic skill is something a computer program cannot truly develop.

The RC powered car can also include RC gas powered cars. Most remote gas powered models use glow plug engines that use nitro-methane or nitro for short. These models are more expensive, but remote gas cars add more realism to the hobby. Remote gas powered cars incorporate small piston engines very similar to real automobiles. These too can be a wonderful way for you or your children to learn.

Whether you choose to build an RC electric powered car or an RC gas powered car you will learn valuable information that you or your children can build upon. Once you have completed your RC powered car you can take it to the next level and compete. You can race your car against others and learn to alter your car to be faster and more maneuverable to increase your chances of winning. RC powered cars are a good way to spend time with family and others.

FCC Chairman - Put On Da Digital Spot

The chairman of the FCC, who was given $5 mil to get the word out about the digital transmission change, used a tad over $355k to sponsor the No. 38 car for three races to help get the word.

Because he's using the NASCAR medium that can potentially reach millions (If the networks give the car the proper exposure in the next few races) he's being called a reckless spender for blowing the money on a NASCAR sponsorship.

Maybe they should take a peek at the $37 million spent by McCain on his campaign LAST MONTH alone!

On Feb. 17, 2009, television stations will start broadcasting in digital instead of analog signals. The effective result, so they say, will free up valuable airwaves for both public safety announcements and wireless providers.

After Feb 17 (Which is two days after the Daytona 500) televisions that are using "rabbit ear" antennas will need a converter box to receive signals after that.

I've read in places that we (The U.S.) are just trying to play catch up to Japan, but that could just be hearsay.

Driver Points Standings, The Top 5

As we head into the final races of the season, it seems almost like a certainty to most that Jimmie Johnson will be collecting his third CONSECUTIVE championship NASCAR Cup Title.

I'm a cautious one at times and say "Hold on there folks. There's a few races to go."

In fact, 7 races ago, everyone was all but certain that the championship was going to Kyle Busch. Yet with bad luck, fates and my unlucky hat, that isn't going to happen anytime soon. (I'll be explaining my "unlucky" hat in a later article.)

What I'm trying to say is that with three races to go, anything is still possible: engine or tire failures; getting caught up in someone else's wreck or bad pit road driving.

If something were to happen to Jimmie, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and even Jeff Burton are ready to pounce. So I'm not getting ready to buy my championship Jimmie Johnson diecast just yet.

Here's a gander at the top 5 in the points standings and you'll see what I mean.
RANK +/- DRIVER POINTS BEHIND
1 -- Jimmie Johnson 6248 Leader
2 2 Carl Edwards 6065 -183
3 -1 Greg Biffle 6063 -185
4 -1 Jeff Burton 6030 -218
5 1 Kevin Harvick 5941 -307

Planning to build the Fastest Radio Controlled Car?

by Tristan Levis
Many people think of remote controlled cars as toys for kids. However, there is a huge difference between remote control cars for kids and remote control cars for adults. The complexities of the cars have a very wide gap. Kids cars will run on just a few AA batteries. RC cars for adults feature full miniature engines.

Lots of the popular motor kits run on fuel such as gasoline or nitro. Others run on large battery packs that are essentially beefed up versions of kids toys. These cars require just as much maintenance as a real car, since they have all of the same components (plus all of the radio transmitting gear!) to deal with.

When building a remote controlled car, you will have many different choices regarding the quality of the components that you use to make it. You can stick with some simple hobby store components, but those are not likely to make a car that will win any races.
If you want to go all-out on a project, you can get top quality parts. You should be prepared to spend some money to get what it takes, but once you have it all together you will have a car that you can truly be proud of.

If you want to assemble this type of amazing car, you will need to look for several things in particular when buying components. These will help you get the maximum performance for your money.

The fastest engine choice that you can find is a nitro engine. Nitromethane is an alternative to regular gasoline, and runs much better for RC cars. It is usually heavier, and therefore more cumbersome on the handling of the car. However, if you are going to be on a fairly straightforward and tame race course, it is a great choice and will provide a huge speed.

The only down side is that nitro engines are known for wearing down faster, and breaking at a higher rate. If you use a nitro engine frequently, you can almost expect it to break after intense usage. It is a good idea to have an electric engine that you can swap it out with when the need arises.

The other parts of the car are equally important when you are aiming for absolute fastness. If you are you going all-out on a project, you should expect to spend quite a bit on components like wheels and axels.

Usually you want to get wheels that are extremely firm and light. If you have the opportunity to go out to a hobby store and test out a few different components, you will be able to decide exactly what you want based on experiencing it first-hand.

This is the best way to shop for anything, and the same goes for remote control cars. Since the parts are usually highly swappable, you can directly compare one with another by trying them in quick succession.

If you aren't a very technically inclined person, the thought of picking all of these parts might not sound very fun. However, you might not have to go through this process. It is possible to buy kits that include all top of the line parts, and are quite easy to assemble. With these you won't get the high level of customization that you would get out of building a regular home-made car.
Being able to choose all of the parts separately is a great benefit, although 90% of the time you can replace individual parts if you decide that you want to go for something that is of a higher quality or a little bit faster than what you had before. Tristan Levis is the webmaster of unblock myspace

All of these things really add up. If you have one part of a car that doesn't perform as well, the entire thing will be affected. Therefore you need to choose your parts carefully to have the best remote controlled car possible.

Curious About the Manufacturers Championship?

NASCAR scores the championship race for manufacturers in a very interesting process.

The winning car earns that manufacturer 9 points.
The second-highest manufacturer receives 6 points.
The third-highest manufacturer receives 4 points.
The fourth-highest manufacturer receives 3 points.

I find that interesting that the lead car of that manufacturer gets points, but subsequent cars behind it doesn't.

Food for Thought:
What if a Chevy wins, followed by 5 Fords, then 3 Toyota's and then a Dodge and then more Chevy's? Obviously the Chevy's would be at the bottom of the pack in points.

On the other side of the coin:
But this system does seem to buffer the fact that Chevy makes up a large chunk of the field so possibly this levels the math a bit. Or maybe they should divide the points by the number of cars of that make in the field. That would statistically help smooth out the numbers advantage.

Manufacturer Points As They Stand Now
RANK MAKE POINTS BEHIND WINS
1 Chevrolet 198 Leader 10
2 Toyota 197 -1 10
3 Ford 193 -5 9
4 Dodge 138 -60 4

Looks like Dodge needs some work. Oh yea, we already knew that! But at least this year, with Toyota in the mix, there would appear to be parity in this points table!

TV Action From Texas and ABC's Squandering Ratings

This weekend, all three series will be coming to us from Texas!

ALL TIMES PACIFIC!! HA!!
On Friday, we have the Craftsman Truck Series on SPEED at 5:30 PM.
Saturday sees the Nationwide Series on ESPN2 at 12 PM.
And Sunday has the Sprint Cup Series on ABC at 12 PM.

The real question though remains: Will ABC actually pick up the pace and improve on their coverage? Despite exciting developing stories with driver changes and 4 drivers in contention for the Cup (At the moment), ratings are flat lining for the free telecasts on ABC as folks head to other sources for their race info. The Daly Planet touches on this issue while I have to ponder why ABC has it's crack staff ask such redundant questions every week instead of trying to mix it up a bit.

If you stop to digest what the reporter is asking, you'll see what I mean. How many times can you ask a driver how a wreck felt? (That elicited my ever popular response: Smack them upside the head with a piece of car hood and say: "Like that.")

Why not ask if they were expecting it, or what was the very first thought you had as it started, or when it ended. Do you hang on to the steering wheel or let go. Do you close your eyes or keep them open. Are you glad you at your Wheaties this morning? Will you have to answer for this come Monday morning?

But no.

It's true, there is very little that you can ask that's different, but you can at least try to mix it up. In my other media job, I've interviewed folks and asked about their intentions, or hey, I have a few questions, but first, is there anything on the table you want to address? Let them start the conversation and bounce off what they say.

ABC - We know how a wreck feels. In fact, before the director sends the reporter to ask that fateful question, maybe we should introduce him to the car hood!

Owners Points Scramble Going To Texas

We have a good scramble of close knit owners points going on. Only 3 more races before the top 35 are locked in for the front part of the 2009 season.

I don't see the No. 10 car getting in.
The No. 77 Dodge is beleaguered as it is... I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make it.
OK, I'm clueless as to what the No 347 is, but he's only 80 points back from 35th.
The No. 84 has been dabbling above and below the magic 35th spot for weeks.. almost months it feels like.
I fully expect to see Robby Gordon pull his car out of the Mikey Waltrip reserved spot... and be in the top 35 for next year.
I have no read on the No. 22 car. I'll let you know what I think after the last race!!!

A guide to gas driven RC vehicles

by Holly Smith

RC or radio-controlled cars, which run on a nitro methane-based fuel or glow fuel, allow great power and performance. Gas powered RC cars are often highly customizable, allowing hobbyists to use a array of engines and design category. There are even different types of transmitters available depending upon how you would prefer your car to work.
Engines obviously, one of the more vital aspects of gas sun RC cars is the engine. A array of different engine models are available for you to choose from. Instead of the spark plugs that a full-size automotive engine would have, these engines have a "glow plug" that is initiated by what is known as a "glow starter".

Fuel it's a particular fuel that is nitro methane-based and formulated for the car's engines. Special lubricants are supplemented to the fuel combination to guard the engine from extreme heat and wear.

Radio The radio that you use to manage your gas powered RC cars can be the similar type that is used to manage an electric model of RC car. In addition to the battery that runs the radio controller, you might find yourself in require of batteries to give power to the radio receiver in the vehicle itself.

Sport vs. Competition a number of different options and body styles present for gas powered RC cars. You can decide from trucks, sedans, buggies, popular car models, and even stock cars. Many of the vehicle types available commercially come in two different version; a sport version, and a competition version. Sport cars tend to price less, and provide basic options that are popular with beginners and casual hobbyists.

Mark Martin to HMS Early?

Did anyone else catch the little tidbit on Speed Channel last weekend?

Oh, it wasn't anything too big... just that Mark Martin might finish out the last three races of the season in the No. 5 while Casey Mears could possibly start driving the No. 33 Chevy for RCR at Homestead.

It was a quick snippet Larry McReynolds put out there.

That's a lot of swap ups for drivers, cars and contracts / sponsors. Is this possible? Will this happen? We only have to wait a few days indeed.

5 Quick Factors When Buying A New Or Used RC Model

by Manny Z

Buying a new or used RC model car is a rewarding and exciting process. Gas or electric? Truck or car? Helicopter or plane? There are many considerations you must address before making these decisions. However, there are 5 top factors that will help you on your decision.

Battery or gas?
The major factors determining your choice here are run time and noise. Gas RC cars, trucks, planes, or helicopters are usually loud, even with a muffler installed. The advantage of gas RC's are that they can run a lot longer with a tank of fuel versus a battery powered RC. The average battery life on a RC vehicle will give you roughly 10 to 25 minutes of run time - at full speed. Some radio control trucks and cars deplete energy faster due to accessories like lights, horns and other gadgets.

Kit vs RTR?
When buying a new RC car or truck or even a plane, there are 2 directions you can take based on your patience, budget, and skill level. If you're the adventurous type and enjoy working on a project from beginning to end then a Kit package is your best option. Kits involve putting together the entire RC car, truck, or plane together from a box of pieces into the final product, which you can be proud of your accomplishment! Kit packages are usually more expensive but are more modifiable. RTR or "Ready to Run" packages are ready to go outside of the box. Charge the battery or fuel up the tank and you'll be enjoying your new RC within minutes, versus hours or even days compared to kits.

Location, Location, Location
Gas powered RC cars and trucks require space and are not ideal for apartment complexes or homes which could have neighbors calling in noise complaints to your local authorities. Radio controlled planes and helicopters need wide open spaces with little obstruction for safe operation. Electric RC's can normally be operated anywhere as they are considerably less noisy than gas RC's. Another consideration is terrain. Is your RC truck or car an off-road buggy or stomper truck or is it a track racer? For example, street RC's perform better and tires last longer on pavement versus asphalt.

Wear and Tear
There are great deals out there on unwanted RC models, however it is important to understand the wear-and-tear of these vehicle before you shell out your hard-earned cash. Start with the heart. That is check the motor, the most important piece to the model. If it's gas, check for oil leakage around the head and base of the motor. Shocks when worn out tend to leak oil as well so look at these with a close eye as well.

What's your Budget
With prices for used buggies around $75 to fully loaded USED RC Helicopters peaking over $1,500, it's best to have an understanding of your purchasing budget, but also your operational budget as well. After you buy your new or used radio controlled model the spending doesn't stop there as you will have maintenance costs for tires, batteries, fuel, bushings, blades, servos, and more. Depending on how serious you are involved with your RC model will determine how much of an operating budget you will need.

Kyle Petty's Replacement: Chad McCumbee. How'd He Do?

Atlanta was Chad McCumbee's debut in the No. 45 Petty Enterprises car, where he is expected to replace Kyle Petty next year.

So how'd he do?

How's 6 laps down in 36th sound to you?  Yea.  What a resounding success of a replacement!

Kyle's take on the matter was that the company that bought into Petty Enterprises, Boston Ventures, has not done anything to help the team become more competitive. Kyle also made note that none of the mergers have done much to help the other teams who have merged either, in as much as performance goes.

Personally, I never expected improvement in any team after being absorbed.  For me, mergers just meant the new entity gets exposure to the NASCAR fanbase while helping the merged team stay afloat.  It's almost a pure marketing ploy if you ask me.  But that's just me.

Campaign 2008

So I'm working 12 hours or more a day (which is actually really fun), just wanted to show everyone the food selection and let you know that I probably won't be posting anything until after the elections when my life resumes.

The home office, some paper, 3 cell phones and a laptop, what else do you need?

Another Sponsor Is Departing: Kodak

After a 22-year relationship with NASCAR, Eastman Kodak Co. is taking it's leave of NASCAR and increasing it's marketing presence into professional golf.   ... Golf?

Their reasoning is that they feel they have a better fit with golf while highlighting their digital brand and hope to engage more overseas customers, since 60% of their sales is overseas.

Along with the sport, they are, of course, severing their ties with Penske Racing also.

10 Essential Applications Included in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex

The new release of Ubuntu, codenamed Intrepid Ibex, is scheduled for October 30 and pre-orders are available through ShipIt, a wonderful service which allows you request completely free CDs, which usually arrive in one month.

Intrepid comes with pretty much bleeding-edge packages: GNOME 2.24.1, OpenOffice 2.4.1 (OpenOffice 3.0 is now available, but it is not included in 8.10), Firefox 3.0.3 and GIMP 2.6.1. Although Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is out, 3.0.3 is the version which ships with Intrepid, and I guess it's a smart choice considering there was enough time to test this release.

In this article I will briefly review 10 most essential applications which come by default included on the Ubuntu desktop CD. I took several screenshots using the default Ubuntu theme, and a few using the new DarkRoom theme.

Music player: Rhythmbox 0.11.6
Rhythmbox is the default music player coming with GNOME, and also the default for Ubuntu. It comes with an audio library, Magnatune and Jamendo music stores, support for podcasts, Internet radio and Last.fm song submission. You can even download music torrent files from Jamendo directly from within Rhythmbox.

Movie player: Totem 2.24.2
I usually prefer KDE/Qt applications over the ones built in GTK, and the same applies here. I always used players like Kaffeine or SMPlayer instead of Totem. Totem has support for DVDs, but most of them won't work even with libdvdcss2 installed, even though in other players they work flawless. Seeking is very slow and choppy. Totem has support for plugins and subtitles. For DVD support and w32codecs, you will have to use the Medibuntu.org repositories.

Office suite: OpenOffice.org 2.4.1
OpenOffice has done some amazing things bringing a completely full-featured office application to Linux, and also offering support for the OpenDocument Format. Although Intrepid comes with 2.4.1, in the meantime OpenOffice 3.0 was released and is available on their official website. Here are the applications included with this office suite:
- OpenOffice.org Writer - word processor
- OpenOffice.org Calc - spreadsheet
- OpenOffice.org Impress - presentation
- OpenOffice.org Draw - drawing
- OpenOffice.org Base - database
- OpenOffice.org Math - equation editor

Web browser: Firefox 3.0.3
I think Firefox needs no introduction. The last stable release is 3.0.3 which is also included in Intrepid, while a beta for 3.1 has been released on the official Mozilla website. If you want Flash support, you will have to install it using sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree with your user password. An extremely annoying bug I could catch was that sometimes right-clicking an image (for example in the form used to write this post) will do anything but open the right-click context menu: it will either try to bookmark it, open it in a new tab or new window and so on. I think this should be fixed. In fact, Firefox behaves in a same manner on Debian too (and probably it's not distro-specific), it won't open the context menu when right-clicking if you just opened a few more images in separate tabs.

File manager: Nautilus 2.24.1
Nautilus comes with tabbed browsing, bookmarks, a 'Computer' place which will list your partitions/hard drives (including the umounted ones) and optical drives. You have three modes for viewing files: icon view, list view and compact view; it provides a sidepanel which you can toggle on/off using F9; you can set emblems to files, sort them by name, type, modification date, size and emblems. Nautilus also comes with a configuration tab for choosing default actions when media is inserted or other devices are connected to the system.

CD/DVD burner: Brasero 0.8.2
Brasero supports burning in multi-session mode, it burns CDs/DVDs and ISO images. You can also create audio CDs, DVDs or SVCDs. It provides a minimal interface, allowing you to drag and drop files to be burnt. Brasero has a very suggestive name, and it is also in tone with the famous Human theme Ubuntu uses. It comes with four plugins by default, one of them being the 'normalize' plugin, which sets consistent volume to tracks burnt to an audio CD. I personally never liked to alter original sound, but some prefer it that way in order to prevent very high sounds.

Terminal application: GNOME Terminal
I find work in a terminal powerful and faster in many occasions. GNOME Terminal is the default shell-like application in Ubuntu, and it supports desktop transparency effects, background images or solid colours, profiles and tabs. An essential tool for any Linux user if you ask me.

Text editor: Gedit 2.24.0
This is the default text editor, which can also be used as an integrated development environment (IDE), just like Geany or Kate in KDE. Gedit has the same simple interface characteristic to GNOME applications, but it can be expanded via plugins. It includes syntax highlighting, indentation, a whole bunch of plugins like the spell checker or document statistics. It's simple but powerful enough for small projects.

IM and IRC client: Pidgin 2.5.2
Cleverly named, this is the default IM and IRC client in GNOME. Pidgin supports various IM protocols like Yahoo!, MSN, AIM, ICQ or Google Talk and can be also used as a basic client for internet relay chat. It comes with plenty plugins, some of which would be:
- Nautilus integration
- Join/part hiding
- Evolution integration
- History (to keep conversation logs)
The good thing is that it supports all those protocols, so you won't need to use a separate client for each of them.

Image editor: GIMP 2.6.1
GNOME comes with Eye of GNOME for viewing images, which I guess should be the 'essential' application instead of GIMP. But since EOG comes with every GNOME distribution, I decided upon the new GIMP. Yes, Ubuntu comes with the new 2.6.1 release instead of the old stable 2.4.x, which apparently will be shipped in Debian Lenny.

Atlanta, Tires and Tired Drivers

A peer of mine was pondering out loud about the Atlanta race this last weekend.

Working the Steering Wheel
My peer Scott called it an "ice rink" or "skating rink" affect that we were seeing this last weekend at Atlanta Motorspeedway for the Pep Boys Auto 500.  After the first few laps after a stop, drivers were literally skating all over the place as we watched them "saw" their steering wheels to keep the cars under control.

So I wondered the following thoughts:

Is this yet another function of the Goodyears issues with blowing out as much as they did in the previous races or an expected result of just good racing?   I'd think is just good old fashion tire wear and racing for once and it probably is not any side affect of tire issues, perse.

Goodyear has been hammered enough as it is.

Not to mention it's fun to see just who can handle their cars under these conditions and who can't.  I hate to bang on Mikey (Michael Waltrip) but we had at least three cautions from his car disintegrating for one reason or another throughout the day.  If it weren't for bad luck, he's have no luck some days!

Surprising Performances
Non Performance:  You know who surprised me?  Tony Stewart finishing 17th in The Home Depot Toyota No. 20 on the tail end of the lead lap.  I've always thought of him as a wheel man of sorts and thought this kind of condition would be right up his sleeve.  Are we seeing a short timers perspective / attitude from his team or Tony?  Or were they literally that lost on a track condition we've seen them conquer before?

Good Performance: Kudos goes to A.J. Allmendinger for bringing the No 10 Sears Auto Center / Valvoline No. 10 into 14th.  I'm glad he's out from under his old team and getting a chance to show just what he can do.  And A.J. is doing it under a new team in an infrastructure he's not ingrained in, not familiar with.

Wow.  When Jimmie Johnson was busted for speeding on pit road and he had to take his medicine under green, my only thought wasn't that he's doomed his championship, but how will the team manage to salvage the day.  From a lap down to 2nd ain't a bad way to salvage it.  That's for sure.

Expected or Not:  Despite driving the bastard child of the Penske garage, Ryan Newman got his No. 12 Kodak Dodge up into 16th on the lead lap at the end of the day.  Admittedly, I was busy doing other things during the race, but I'm not sure just how much or little media exposure Ryan got on Sunday.  Maybe he did - I was just busy writing, but near the end of the race, you can see he repainted his car with the colors of the wall and still managed a 16th place finish.  Nice...  and kudos to Ryan once again for taking decently supported equipment from KHI and putting it in the winners circle for his debut in the Truck Series race on Saturday!

5 Simple APT Tricks for Debian and Ubuntu

Here are five simple tricks for APT, the Advanced Packaging Tool used on Debian and Debian-based distributions like Ubuntu.

View all the packages installed on a system

The easiest way to do it is:

dpkg --get-selections

It does not require to be root, and will display all the packages installed via APT. For example, the first lines may look something like:
$ dpkg --get-selections | head
acetoneiso2 install
acidrip install
acpi-support-base install
acpid install
adduser install
akregator install
alien install
alsa-base install
alsa-oss install
alsa-utils install
You can also put the entire list in a text file by redirecting the output, like this:

dpkg --get-selections > installed_packages.txt

Then read this file with a text editor or using less installed_packages.txt.

List files which get installed by a package
-L is a handy parameter to dpkg which will show you what files a package will install.

dpkg -L package_name

For example:

dpkg -L amarok

Will show all the files which are going to be installed by package amarok. You don't have to be root to run it.

Upgrade your system using a one-liner
Type as root:

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

This command will update your list of packages, and if its return status is successful, it will proceed to the next command, apt-get dist-upgrade, which will upgrade all of your packages and will install new dependencies if needed. Use dist-upgrade when you want all of your packages to be installed, and no package left as being kept back.

Install the dependencies of an application
Sometimes you need to compile from source a newer version of an application which is already included in the repositories. For example, to install the development libraries for BasKet, you would run as root:

apt-get build-dep basket

And then you can proceed to compile your application. Note that sometimes newer versions of applications may depend on newer libraries or other packages than you do not have in the repositories, so this won't always work.

Remove unused package files
When you install software using APT, the DEB packages are kept inside the /var/cache/apt/archives directory. In time, the size of it could get very large. To see what is the size of that directory, you can use:
$ du -h /var/cache/apt/archives/
4.0K /var/cache/apt/archives/partial
956M /var/cache/apt/archives/
In order to clean up all these packages you can use, as root:

apt-get clean

This command will remove all the packages except files which are locked. There is another command, apt-get autoclean, which will remove all the packages which are no longer available in the repository (older versions of packages which can't be downloaded any more).

Brothers in NASCAR

Do you know who the brothers are with the most wins in NASCAR? Richard and Maurice Petty. Confusing as it seems, Maurice made 26 starts in NASCAR, but even though he never won a race, Richard's numbers propel them to the front!

Fun With RC Cars

by William Williams

Do you have a need for speed? Then fulfill that need safely with RC cars! You will absolutely love RC cars if you have a penchant for high speeds. RC automobiles are immensely fun, they move fast, and children of all ages and genders love them! RC cars make for superlative Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, or just for a simple act of gift sharing and kindness. From the novice to the advance RC car racer, there are suitable RC automobiles for just about anyone that desires to partake in this fun-filled hobby!

When a consumer first sets out to buy any RC cars, it is recommended by many that the consumer invest in the lesser expensive automobiles currently sold. This is particularly important when buying RC cars for children simply because children are more apt to break them. If worried about continual replacement costs it is best to go for models that cost the least amount of money at purchase. When making a purchase involving RC cars, it will also be necessary to choose the proper car for indoor/outdoor usage.

Whether a consumer has set out to buy RC cars for boys or for young girls, there are enough styles for children to select from. For younger girls in particular, it's easy to find RC automobiles that have passenger room for any toy dolls the girl may own, and there are even some models that will operate while simultaneously producing bubbles! As far as boys are concerned, there are plenty of tough and rugged looking RC cars for sale, and the cars make for easy to please gifts.

Teens and young adults, and even adults appreciate RC automobiles, particularly the more expensive varieties. Often times, people like to invest in the more expensive RC automobile variants to enter into racing events with or to simply get a lot of speed out of their use. The cars suitable for racing events can go as fast as forty miles per hour in most instances. The consumer will need to bear in mind that replacement parts and/or accessories to such devices may be a bit costly, but only because such pieces are more durable and long lasting.

There are a variety of outlets where consumers can get RC automobiles, parts, and accessories, but one will find that there is usually discounts offered or lower prices assigned to RC automobiles when buying from online vendors. This is because there is often less overhead for the vendor, and the vendor has a global audience to appeal to online. The latter cost savings and increase in profit potential allows for lower costs to be delivered to the consumer interested in RC cars and products. RC makes and models range, depending upon the manufacturer and it is completely possible to get RC cars in classic styles or sports and racing car styled variants. Of course, if regular cars or sports cars aren't quite what you are seeking, you might want to give consideration to some of the excellent RC trucks currently being sold.

Whether one chooses to buy online or to speak with a hobby store specialist, it's important to ask a lot of questions before making a final decision. While it is relatively easy to buy RC cars for children, the racing RC cars are a considerable investment and such investments take due consideration. The potential speed of the RC car, the battery life, the durability of the RC car, the ease of assembly, and the type of warranties on the product, if offered, need to be examined in full before making the final purchase. Careful selection of RC automobiles ensures maximum enjoyment when participating in this incredibly popular hobby!

Cousin Carl Gets Another Win at Atlanta

It wasn't as exciting as when he rub passed Jimmy Johnson in previous years, but with Jimmie Johnson getting fresh tires with 8 to go, and after having sped on pit road earlier, Johnson showed why they are in contention for the Cup by finishing 2nd as Carl Edwards fought his Roush Fenway Ford up to the win in the Pep Boys Auto 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Johnson almost got taken out by Denny Hamlin when Hamlin slid up the track sideways a bit into Johnson, but Hamlin saved it and Johnsons day!

Matt Kenseth was 4th,
Kyle Busch was 5th.

It wasn't a good day for some of the Cup chasers.

On lap 302 we saw a multi-car crash with Jeff Burton slipping up a notch and bumping Dave Blaney, but that was all it took to start the incident that collected Juan Montoya, Reed Sorenson and Joe Nemechek.

Michael Waltrip just disintegrated through out the day with a tire issue and then ensuing debris calls from car parts flying off his call. Mikey was the yellow flag on three different occasions.

We saw a lot of coverage of the chasers and a lot of coverage on the wrecks with good lists of who was involved in the incidents.

The chaser finished in the following spots:
  • Edwards - 1st
  • Johnson - 2nd
  • Hamline - 3rd
  • Kenseth - 4th
  • Ky Busch - 5th
  • Jeff Gordon - 9th
  • Biffle - 10th
  • Earnhardt Jr. - 11th
  • Harvick - 13th
  • Stewart - 17th
  • Burton - 18th
  • Bowyer - 20th
What this did was keep Jimmie Johnson in first in the standings by 183 points,
Carl Edwards moved up 2 posts into 2nd,
2 points behind Carl is Greg Biffle,
Jeff Burton slipped a spot into 4th, 218 points behind Johnson.
Harvick moved up one spot into 5th - 312 points behind Johnson.

Though nobody is mathematically eliminated yet, it seems that unless something happens to the top 5 drivers in each of the next 3 races, inevitability is starting loom on the horizon. For one moment, after Jimmie Johnson got nailed for speeding on pit road and had to take a green flag drive through penalty, it looked like a chink in the championship armor but the Hendricks No. 48 Lowes Chevy team proved why they are in first place in the standings today.

Today, the track that was acting more like a large version of Martinsville than a speedway.

Battle for Wesnoth - Awesome Turn-Based Strategy Game

Battle for Wesnoth is one of the most popular and played turn-based strategy (TBS) games on Linux, if not the most popular. It's a free, open-source community-driven project which has done some amazing improvements since its initial release, in 2003. It comes with wonderful concepts for gameplay, it includes great 2D artwork and music, and more important, it can keep you playing inside a fascinating universe, either online in multiplayer battles or in single-player mode in beautiful campaigns or single-map mode versus AI.

Although I never was a truly skilled player, I always enjoyed to complete a campaign, go play on the official multiplayer server or just read the forum, which actually is a great resource of strategy tips, ideas, suggestions and debates regarding playability or improvements.

Wesnoth 1.4.5 running in window mode

The development is more alive than many other open-source projects, and it is done in an open fashion on the forums. The developers are implicated there and often talk to other players and eventually listen to suggestions and add them in the development version. The stable release (currently 1.4.x) benefits of updates every few weeks or so, while the development branch (1.5.x) is also put out to the public for testing purposes.

Many add-ons are available: campaigns, factions, new maps and eras. The game comes with six default factions: Rebels, Loyalists, Drakes, Northerners, Undead and Knalgan Alliance. Each faction benefits of its own units available for recruiting; and each unit has special traits and abilities. The battle between players takes place on a hex map, and each hex can provide different defense resistance, depending on the terrain and the type of unit standing on it.

Maps included by default are well-tested and some of them gained real popularity in time due to either playability or situations which can evolve in time. For example, an interesting map is Isar's Cross, a 2vs2 map which although is small-sized, can make the game evolve into very interesting positions, where the whole game can depend on one unit, a village, or just a lost tempo during the day/night cycle. I've seen players who played this map for so long that they play it like chess: well-known combinations and movement rules for X first moves, depending on own race and the enemy's.

Of course, the most important part of the game is that it randomises a battle's result using the chance to hit, so you can't be absolutely sure what the result of a battle will be until it's over. There are strong debates back on the forums, with some players complaining this system may not be the best, but in fact it's the only thing that keeps the game entertaining. After all, a skilled player will always beat a novice player, even if the latter is 'lucky'.

Online playing is a real pleasure. There are always games which you can join, or eventually observe. Tournaments are organised often too, via the Wesnoth Ladder website.

Multiplayer lobby

Another aspect I just love is how players gather on the forum and discuss a situation or issue, accompanied by various replays, suggestions solutions or helping a new player who can't beat a scenario.

The game also provides a complete help system for gameplay and each unit. This is the basic stuff you'll need to learn in order to gain experience and skill. Of course, it needs time to master this game. I play it for maybe 2 years or so (version 1.0.2 if I recall correctly), sometimes occasionally and sometimes for a couple of days non-stop, and I still can't say I qualify more than medium-skilled. The second way of getting help is via the Wesnoth wiki, which contains invaluable information on playing the game, together with complete guides. I already mentioned the third way, which is the forums. Don't forget #wesnoth @ Freenode if you use IRC, you can chat about game aspects there too.

Isar's Cross map

Being actively developed, this game always gives me the impression of constant movement and improvement, like it's 'alive'. Release 1.4.x brought new artwork, a new and improved interface. I'm talking about real improvements: scrolling maps is gives a smooth impression, menus now have sounds when clicked, the game interface is maybe five times faster than 1.2.x, several units are now animated, transparency effects for game messages windows, and these are just a few of the great new features. New official campaigns have been introduced, and plans are to increase it even more in the next stable release.

Waterloo Sunset map

You can run Wesnoth in both fullscreen and windowed mode, using the default shortcut Ctrl+F.

Playing Wesnoth is maybe one of the most awesome gaming experiences, at least it is for me. I like to see this completely free, community-maintained project getting more and more fun and polished with each new release.

Compiling from source in Ubuntu 8.04 and Debian Lenny
You can compile and install the last 1.4.5 release easily on both Debian and Ubuntu.

Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file as root and make sure you have a line which starts with deb-src. Ubuntu users, make sure to precede the following command as root. For example, on Debian Lenny the line in the sources.list should look like:

deb-src ftp://ftp.ro.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

While on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron:

deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main universe multiverse

Save the file, then update your packages list (also as root):

apt-get update

You will first need to fetch the dependencies as root:

apt-get build-dep wesnoth

Next, download the source tarball from the official website, here, uncompress it using:

tar -xjf wesnoth-1.4.5.tar.bz2

Then change the current working directory to wesnoth-1.4.5 and issue the following commands:

./configure
make
make install

The last one as root. You can pass the ./configure script the prefix parameter, e.g. ./configure --prefix=/home/your_user/usr/, and then make install as normal user if you like. This should be all.

First-Person Shooter Games for Linux II: Nexuiz and OpenArena

Yesterday I reviewed three classic first-person shooter games for Linux, Wolfenstein: ET, UT2004 and ioQuake3. Today I will continue with two other first-person shooter (FPS) games, natively available for Linux: Nexuiz and OpenArena. They both are currently maintained and the wonderful thing about them is that they all are completely open-source, free and usually available in all the major distributions.

In Debian you can install them typing as root:

apt-get install nexuiz openarena

While in Ubuntu you can use Synaptic or precede the above command with sudo and enter your user password.

Nexuiz
Nexuiz is a completely free first-person shooter game which somewhat resembles the Quake 3 gameplay. It was released in 2005 and the current version is now 2.4.2, which comes included in the Debian repositories.

Although I did not play Nexuiz more than a few times before, I was surprised to see how well I can perform in DM games. I think Nexuiz is one of the games which can be learned very easy if you're used to games like Quake. It's very fast paced, but it can look a little too crowded on small maps with over 10 players and fragging does not necessarily need skill, instead fragging and moving cleverly around in order to avoid another 3-4 players around you does need. In fact, this is actually happening with any FPS unless an appropriate map is selected depending on the number of players.

The interface is futuristic, and all the settings can be easily changed without having to search in bloated menus. Since I use the ESDF keys for movement, I had no trouble finding the configuration options, and I also switched the default resolution to 1280x1024. I also had to lower texture and particle details, since my nVIDIA 7600 GS is rather old now. It behaves very well, with only a few FPS drops when the area gets crowded.

I had no trouble connecting to one of the official servers with a low ping, and the server was full of players. Note that for opening the console you will need to use SHIFT+ESCAPE and ESCAPE to quit it. I never understood why they changed this behaviour in games like Quake 4 or ET: QW too for example, nor did I read the explanation somewhere. My guess is that beginner users would accidentally press the ` key and they did not know how to close it anymore.

Nexuiz is one of the games which surely make it a pleasure to play, especially that is completely free. Congratulations to the Alientrap team for putting out this game for the enjoyment of the Linux community.

FAQ - read this if you play for the first time

OpenArena
This is probably the most popular game based on the ioQuake 3 engine. It's practically a Quake 3 clone, with its own free data, so if you are used to Quake 3, you will learn how to play this one very easy.

You can use your old cfg file for settings and scripts, and the menus resemble the Quake 3 interface in detail.

All the modes available in Quake 3 are also available in OpenArena: we have DM, TDM, CTF and Tournament. To these, the game also adds four more modes of its own: Elimination, CTF Elimination, Last Man Standing and Double Domination. It includes both new maps and player models, together with new (and more appealing in my opinion) textures, but some of the CTF maps looked to me a little poor in detail. Of course, the bunny hopping feature is available in OpenArena too.

I could only find three online servers which had players connected, the others were empty. Playing with bots is not so bad, but it doesn't compare with playing an online CTF in 4 vs 4.

Edit: In order to be able to download maps which you don't have from the server you are connecting to, open the console typing ` and type: /set cl_allowdownload 1

Homepage

Both Nexuiz and OpenArena have many fans especially in the Linux community, and I think you will easily make friends on an online server.

Although this is a matter of personal taste, I still find Quake 3 or ET more addictive to play, but these two games have two advantages: they have newer graphics and are completely free.

First Time Winners and Race Ending Squabbles

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series

What happens when you put a good driver in good equipment? You get a first time winner, that's what you get. In the past I've noted how the Penske shop seems to never quite get the No.12 car in a consistent performance mode. In the long run, we see the driver, the face of the team as the icon of the performance. I've been a tolerant and patient fan of Ryan Newman since his 2nd year scene on Cup and it's nice to see that when he gets put into decent equipment, he takes advantage of it.

Today (Saturday, Oct 25) in Ryan Newmans first start in the Craftsman Truck Series, he took the win in the E-Z-GO 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Newman took the race lead with 8 laps to but Ron Hornaday Jr still had something to say about it as they swapped the lead one more time. Newman stayed in the high line and thus, had the momentum in the corners.

Behind it all, Denny Hamlin came in third, Todd Bodine fourth and the spirited Scott Speed rounded out the top 5.

This win puts the count for Ryan Newman at 21 victories in the top three series in NASCAR.
  • 13 wins in Sprint Cup.
  • 7 wins in the Nationwide Series.
  • And now,
  • 1 in the Truck Series.
Being a first time starter / winner makes him the fourth driver to win his Truck Series debut. The other drivers are Mike Skinner, Robert Pressley and Kasey Kahne.

Does this bode well for Ryan? Getting this win is his first in a Chevy. He's moving to a Chevy in the Cup Series driving for Stewart-Haas Racing next year. (2009)

NASCAR Nationwide Series

At a time when he needs it most, Carl Edwards won the Kroger 250
at Memphis Motorsports Park. The race ending was pretty exciting and was an exemplary demonstration of good clean racing.

With a green / white / checkers restart,
David Reutimann was on Edwards bumper but never tried moving him with his bumper... good clean racing. In a post race interview, it seemed that Reutimann was regretting not moving Edwards for the win but reconciled himself that he races clean.

Edwards and Reutimann were two of the seven cars left on the lead lap as they were followed by
Kenny Wallace in third, Austin Dillon finished fourth and Joey Logano was fifth.

Even though the finish up front was exciting, the action was back in 13th when Bobby Hamilton Jr. spun off the bumper of Landon Cassill, relegating Hamilton to 21st. After the checkers, Bobby cut Cassill off on pit road, got out and had a chat with Cassill in his window. It looked like Bobby reached in the window but I'm not sure what came of that. According to Cassill, Bobby's head was in his window and bobbed up and down and left and right, but since Bobby never lifted his face plate, he didn't know what he said. LOL.

We'll see what comes of this later on, early next week.

Don't forget:
Tomorrow (Sunday, Oct 26th) the Cup Series race is at Atlanta, on ABC at 1 p.m. ET.
